How you build a squidoo lens is just as important as the content and images you’ve already chosen for your lens.  I want to share my personal 5 squidoo’s and 5 squidoon’t on lens building in Squidoo.

My Personal Squidoo’s!

Do Write Fresh Content

Preparing to write is nothing but choosing a topic to write about. Think about something which you are so interested upon and have knowledge about. Primarily its all about understanding your niche. Even if you want to share some information or talk about something you can write it. The secret behind in choosing a nice is, You should be able to write consistently and make this fresh. Write it in such a way that the readers should be keep coming back to your lens for more information.

If you are a really good writter/blogger and can write about wide range of topics then you can go and check out Google Trends (Give a search about “Google Trends”) and find out the hot topic to write.

Do Make Your Propfile Stand Out

Update your profile with your picture and your expertise and other information. Your profile must be a promising one and show up to others as if you are an expert. This will give the readers some trust and will help them in involving discussions on your lens and will become fan of yours. This is not as vital as your lens content but this is important. You need to get attention from people to build your base and make sales.

Do Base Your Entire Lens Around One Well Researched Keyword

Tags and lens URL are so important from SEO point of view and by its name it can pull audience to your lens. Tags are so important to find your information and lens content. If your dont know how to create tags find a lens from your niche (topic or area of interest) and copy paste in yours. In squidoo you can create handy number of tags which can really bring in targetted traffic. Search in google about Tags in squidoo in your niche and you can copy paste that if you are not an expert.

The next point is creating a nice URL. Choose a nice URL with a good keyword. To get keywords from your niche use some online keyword tools like WordTracker, Overture etc which is my favourite. For example if you want to write about halloween day then create a URL like http://www.hubpages.com/your-keyword

Do Make Content Personal

Now once you are done with all the above, its time to write the content or think about writting one. Always try to provide some unique and quality content. Dont try to copy contents from other site or from your already published blogs. Try to provide fresh and newly written contents. Quality contents will attract audiences and will make them to come back.

Do Control Where Readers Go Next

It takes buyers on average 5-7 clicks before they make a purchase.  It is up to you to ‘control where they go next’.  Add feeds from your blogs or websites to your squidoo lens so that your lens look fresh with updates from your blog. This will also help you to bring traffic to your blog and give you a backlink to your blog. Make all your links from the various sites make a ‘clicking circle’.  Control where they go!

My Personal Squidoon’ts!

Don’t Use Tons of Keyword Tags

Just because you can have up to 40 keyword tags does not mean you should!  Those tags are mainly only read by Squidoo and not Google.  I want Squidoo to love me but I want Google to love me even more!  Only use a few of your researched long tailed keywords in the keyword section.  That is plenty.

Don’t Write Poorly Written Lens Headings

Module headings are very powerful commodities in your lens. Visitors generally skim the headings to decide whether or not they wish to read the lens in detail. In Squidoo, headings are important not just for human readers, but also for the search engine spiders that scan your pages to determine relevance and importance. Make sure your main keyword is in every heading you have on your squidoo lens!  This is a must.  You can have more than that but your keyword phrase must be in every heading.

Don’t Waste Space in Your Profile

Your lens profile (Bio) area tops a column that takes up approximately 25% of your total available lens real estate. This is a huge amount of available space that is almost universally overlooked by lensmasters. It is CRUCIAL that you take advantage of the Bio section to keep your visitors on track.

By inserting HTML into your Bio, you not only can add important graphics and hyperlinks. You also have the ability to shove useless distractions down the page and out of sight. Huh? You hadn’t noticed any distractions? Take a look at your lens. The rightmost column starts with your bio, but under that is a search box, a list of tags, friends, and other bits of goop that don’t pertain to the message you are trying to broadcast. You cannot get rid of them entirely, but by expanding your Bio you can force them further down the page where they do less damage.

Don’t Allow Distracting Ads

This one should be so obvious, yet it is missed by most lensmasters. These are the big display ads that may appear in the rightmost column of your lens. These are MONSTER distractions. If you’re hoping to make a little referral money from clicks on them, you could choose to leave them there. But if you are more interested in selling a product or message of your own, get rid of them!

Remember you want to control where they go!  Get rid of these ads!  You might make $0.05 cents if they click on an ad but you might make $25.00 if they click to buy the product you are promoting.  Your Squidoo Lens should only point to other resources you have created or to the product your are promoting.  Nothing else!  Don’t make Google anymore money!  How much money have they made for you?

Don’t Use Pointless Modules

You have probably seen all the different kinds of fancy Plexo/Flickr/Duel/Polaroid modules available to you. Don’t fall into the trap of trying to jazz up your lens with all these glitzy gimmick modules. Your job is to control where your potential buyers go.  Your overall goal of your lens is to make money.  When you give your potential buyers something to have fun with they will forget to buy anything.  Point them only to your resources and your products.  You want to get them there as soon as possible and that is not achieved by doing a squidoo crossword puzzle!  They may be fun to play with, but they are also MAJOR distractions. If your goal is to sell something, either an idea or a product, think twice before getting carried away with creativity. Ask yourself whether or not these special-purpose modules really enhance your message.

I first began using Squidoo and created more problems than I could have imagined.  Through trial and error I began learning what worked to make sales and what did not.  The top resources that helped me learn how to make a Squidoo lens that converts was this resource “The Secret Cash Machine On Squidoo“. I highly recommend it to anyone learning Squidoo!
